About

Silvermines NS is set in the picturesque and historic village of Silvermines in Co. Tipperary near the town of Nenagh. Nestled at the foot of Sliabh Ciamaltha Silvermines NS is a mixed school with children ranging in age from four years to thirteen years (Junior Infants – 6th class). We presently have 45 families attending our school and there are 70 children on the roll in the school.

There are three mainstream teachers and one shared Special Education teacher. There is also one SNA appointed to the school.

History

The new Silvermines NS school was officially opened on the 20th of June 2012 under the stewardship of the then principal, Mr. Billy Grace. It was constructed on the site of the old school which was originally opened in 1905 following procurement of the land from the estate of Lord Dunalley. While the school caters mainly for children from the Silvermines village and the surrounding hinterland  children travel to the school via bus and car from a large catchment area.

The school grounds of Silvermines NS are extremely spacious and excellently landscaped and boast a playing field (historically known as The Paddock), two outdoor basketball courts, school garden, outdoor classroom, hurling wall and situated in front of the school is a sensory garden complete with fountain and seating areas.

Every effort is made to ensure is a focal point of the community and in conjunction with Silvermines Community Enhancement Group the school has secured the Tidiest School in North Tipperary Award from Tipperary County Council on a number of occasions and has always been ranked either first or second in this prestigious competition.

Green Schools

Silvermines NS takes great pride in entering the Green School Competition and to date has secured three Green Flags, the most recent Flag having been awarded to the school in 2019. Under the guidance of Ms. Sutton students formed the Green Schools Committee and it was a very proud day when our third green Flag was raised by our caretaker, Ms. Josephine Corcoran on the 14th of November last year. In 2020 we will be hoping to attain our 4th Green Flag Award from An Taisce.

The school has consistently been ranked in the top three tidiest schools in Tipperary County Council Tidy Schools competitions and we always strive to ensure that the learning environment for our children is safe, attractive and stimulating for all.

We hope you enjoy viewing our fantastic new website which will bring you all the up to date news for our school.
